Shirt Dress Is Back
The shirt dress is back. We use to wear these dresses in the 60's. I loved them. What's old is new again.
A few weeks ago my daughter had one on and I told her how good she looked in her shirt dress. She didn't know what I was talking about. I explained her dress was called a shirt dress. She said she had bought it at Target and that she liked wearing it because it was very comfortable.
The top of a shirt dress looks like a man's shirt. The dresses are neat and trimming on the body. They have a collar, button front and cuffed sleeves most of the time but the sleeves have changed on some dresses to puffed sleeves, short sleeves or long sleeves. Usually they have a belt of some kind, tie belt or buckle belt. They have buttons all the way down the front. They were made of cotton and they often have pockets.
Today their made of every kind of fabric. They have straight skirts or full skirts. Sometimes the buttons don't go all the way down.
They are the in style dress for this year. Everyone has them I was walking through Penneys the other day and saw a cute one.
They come in all prices from $30.00 at Penneys to $158.00 at Ann Taylor. I'm sure their much more money by other designers.
Wedding Dresses are made like shirt dresses. Some have pockets and the buttons down the front.
I think they are so pretty and classy looking. Like the one in this picture. This one has a good price under $400.00.

Vintage shirt dresses came in all styles and colors. Here are some of those dresses. You can still buy patterns for the dresses from sites like ebay.
I know we wore them with our spike heels and nylons.
I had one dress that my friend in high school borrowed and I never got it back. We had to leave and go home to the states and she never sent it to me. I hated losing that dress.
I bought everything I had with my babysitting money. She's still my friend wonder if she still has that dress. Sure wouldn't fit now.
I did later buy more shirt dresses after I got married. We wore them the same way with our spiked heels or very white canvas tennis shoes or sandals. It was one of the standed outfits for taking the kids to the doctor. Back than we dressed up to go to the doctor, get on plane or even ride the bus.
My grandmother with my grandfather wearing her shirt dress in the 1940's. She always dressed neat and she lived to be hundred. My nice grandfather thought she was the best thing that every walked and he loved her dearly.
it's now 2012 and the shirt dress is popular again this year. Cute with levi jackets over the top. Macy's is selling some by Tommy Hilfiger.
They are so popular that L. L Bean has brought them back. Land's End is also selling them.
L.L Bean the red plaid dress, has a pretty country looking.
Old Vintage Pattens of Shirt Dresses

I made a vest and skirt. That was the kind of patterns our teachers started us with. I actually wore what I made a skirt and vest.
Our kids made pillows in the home economics classes. How times have changed. Easy little squares. Pillows they cared nothing about.
In the 60's actresses like Kim Novak wore the shirt dresses with the collar up. Kim always had her collars up and always looked sexy.
On tv you often saw shirt dresses being worn by mothers like Donna Reed from the Donna Reed Show or Barbara Billingsley from the Leave It To Beaver show.
They were the in thing for mothers even in the 50's.
Pretty in white. Holle Berry in her eyelet white shirt dress.

thoughforce, I agree thanks for stopping by and leaving comment.
I loved the green one, safari style and look but I prefer the A-line with no belt. I haven't seen any shopping, but I am not much of a dress wearer unless it is for church and Kate can flash her nylons all she wants, I am never going back there again, lol Fun hub, thanks.
Jackie Lynnley, I also don't wear dresses much. To cold here if our weather were warmer I might wear more dresses. My daughter wears them all the time.
Thanks for stopping by and leaving comment.
Everyone looks good in a shirt dress. They make the waist smaller and are feminine but easy to wear and work in. I really enjoyed this virtual fashion show.
Thank you and so glad you stopped by my hub and left a comment.
Love this. I love, love the wedding dress. One of my favorites was the one that Diane Lane wore in "Under the Tuscan Sun."

Oh, I remember when the shirt dresses were big in the 60's. I think they were wearing Lady Bug dresses or something like that. And funny you should mention Barbara Billingsly...just got off a Leave it to Beaver binge and wow, June Cleaver was one sharp dresser, surely the best dressed TV mom ever.
