Our Old Farm

We live on an old farm. It uses to be a pig farm. When we moved in the barn was so full of pig poo it took us days to clean it all out. We wanted to clean everything up and have a beautiful country garden planted in the yard.

We decided to start planting flowers in front of the barn. It was a nice sunny warm place.

I had brought some of my flowers along from the old house. It seems every plant we put in grew. Very likely because there was so much pig poo. Most of the flowers grew like crazy but a few we lost. The winters here can be 40 below. Most of the time this is why we lose flowers. I always try to plant flowers which will grow in our zone. The flowers grow in zone three do very well here we can get some zone 4 flowers to grow.

My garden is full I don't want any space between flowers if I can help it. It's kind of wild looking. I don't have any garden tips. I just plant in good dirt, add mulch and water. It's always good to have a husband who is willing to help.

What we plant.

We plant lots of flowers, vegetables and vines in our garden and yard. We also try to add bird houses all around the yard. We have had bluebirds nesting in our bird houses.

I once read somewhere that you should add a bright piece of furniture to a garden so I painted some old lawn chairs in purple and put them in front of our old white picket fence.

Our cat loves to walk around the garden with us and he is always smelling the flowers. I hope you will enjoy my photos.

I'm not going to put my garden hub in the contest. I don't do anything special to grow my garden. I just plant the flowers and vegetables in add a little good dirt, some mulch, water them good, have a husband who helps and I hope they grow.

We use to keep a compost going at our other house, but here we can't it brings the bears in. I don't want to be on the ground in my garden and turn around to a bear standing over me.

Old Barn

Old vintage flowers.

I have flowers in my garden which once belonged to my mother-in-law. The vine growing along the barn was her vine and the pretty golden glows were hers. She's been gone a long time, but she was the first woman in my life who taught me what to plant and when to plant in my garden.

My mother is also a gardener and still keeps up a small garden at 90.

I have iris, peony (my favorite), lilac bushes, lilies, hydrangea, hollyhocks, hostas, and clematis. I try to plant flowers the deer won't like such as coneflower, bee balm and yarrow. An annual flower they don’t like is marigolds. I planted a marigold in a pot next to each of my pumpkins last year and didn’t lose one pumpkin.

In the fall, we will have pumpkins, tomatoes and whatever vegetables we decide to plant. We have a grape vine and it will be full of grapes in the fall as will the apple trees. We have 6 apple trees in the yard. The grape vine attracts so many birds the robin run across the yard like their in a race just to get in the grapevine and eat all they can.

We have also added a bottle tree to the garden. It's finished now and I really enjoy it. Hope you enjoy our garden.

Some Flowers can grow in Zone 3

We are pretty much in zone 3. We can get away with some zone 4 flowers but if we have a bad winter with bitter cold and no snow this is when we lose many of the zone 4 flowers.

This is a haven for butterflies and bees. We have Monarch, Swallowtail and I think I have even seen some Karner Blue Butterflies. The picture is of swallowtail butterflies. They found a small puddle of water by the house and they were all in it. They were doing what butterflies do, puddling.

List of some of our flowers.

Golden Glow

Hostas

Lily-of-valley

Ferns

Blazing Star

Jack-in-the-Pulpit

Cornflower

Honey Suckle Vine

Grasses

Lilies of all kinds (daylilies) (tiger Lilies)

Phlox

Hollyhocks

Bleeding heart

Iris

Primrose

Columbine

Yarrow

Bee Balm

Poppies

A friend sent me the hollyhock seeds about 4 years ago and they are still growing and are beautiful each year. The bees and butterflies love them. My husband is not so crazy about them because I planted them in our vegetable garden.

We have all kinds of bugs and creepy crawlies in our yard and garden. We also have beautiful butterflies and many birds. We have a meadow full of milkweed for the butterflies.

I don't know how well our garden will do this year it's cool here. Planting has been late for the vegetables. Flowers are all coming up late. I still don't have peonies blooming and they are always the earliest.
