The Shabby Chic Way I Decorate.
I love shabby chic but I also love red so it's sometimes hard to work red into a shabby chic design. I have done the best I can and will give you some ideas on what you need for shabby chic. Shabby chic can be used anywhere inside or out in your yard or garden. It can be cheap to decorate shabby chic because it doesn't take new items. Though old or new can be incorporate in this type of decor.
My grandmother was kind of a shabby chic lady. She lived to be 100 and I still try to copy things I remember in her home. She also loved red and had a big red stove in her kitchen.
Some, I guess would say I decorate old fashioned or vintage. Shabby chic is kind of old fashioned. On this hub you will find fabrics that work and item that can be used in shabby chic decorating. I have lots of items on my dresser as you can see but you can always cut this down and put out just a few items. I also use chandeliers in just about every room. Some of these pictures are from our old farm house and others are not. We paint all our trim in the house white so this also helps to add to shabby chic.
Items You can use in Shabby Chic.
Many items can be used for shabby chic. Old mirrors, picture frame, garden racks used in the house, old lamps, old tables, plates in pretty colors, old pictures, old cabinets, bird houses, old shelves etc.
Like I said you can mix and match with old and new. I buy lots from rummage, yard sales, flea markets and antique stores. If you paint it white or in a pastel it will be perfect. I love flowered boxes and use them for photos or bills anything I need to store and they look great with shabby chic.
I paint at least one wall red in three of my rooms. Then I add red all around it. Red goes well with just about any pastel color. Red adds energy to a room.
Kitchen Items
kitchen
Shabby chic can easily be used in the kitchen and dining room as you can see from the picture on here. Roosters are always good with shabby chic. In the kitchen window an old green juicer with a small pink rooster and flowered flower pot.
Flowered plates and pastel colors mix in with a little red if you l ike the red look.
Old teapots, flowered or white vases, old laced dish towels or tablecloths. Linens are always a good way to add shabby chic.
Many of the anitque items you will find for a kitchen were done in pastels.
Paint White
Paint furniture in white. This is a table we have in the living room. The table was in bad shape but once the white was put on it all the flaws disappeared.
The piece in white above our door goes to an old chest of some kind. I can't remember where I found it.
If you go to home and garden stores like Home Depot, you can find wood pieces that can be painted white and can be used around the house for shabby chic. Such newel knobs and post for stairs.
Items for Shabby Chic.
Wire baskets used on the wall in the kitchen or bathroom.
Plate holder in the living room with old and new plates on it. An old mirror I bought at an estate sale many years ago. It always reminded me of the evil queens mirror in Snow White. An old hall tree we have had for years I hang plates in around it and a big star. Shelf done with a window behind it and mirror added to the window fancy brackets to hold it up.
I also like antique gloves they fit right in with shabby chic, so does old books more weathered and worn they look the better. Some of the green, red and brown colors on old books are so pretty.
I hang tassels on knobs on dresser and cabinets. I also but string beads around pictures.
Old hankies are also good to decorate with. Turn them into pillows, throws or lay them under some of your things with little edges hankie sticking out.
In the bathroom I took old pictures of family members at the ocean or at a lake swimming and printed them out framed them and hung up with a star fish. I also use a white shower curtain.
I have an old wire trash can for the toilet paper. Add white towels or like I have white towels with a little pink rose on them.
Fabric that works with Shabby Chic.
Some of the best fabric for shabby chic. Pink always goes with Shabby Chic and it mixes well with red.
Line the inside of your cabinets with fabric or with wallpaper that has the Shabby Chic look.
My favorite designer is Sarah Richardson loved her farmhouse on HGTV.
Bold with shabby chic.
The new look is going bold with shabby chic. Bold colors used in different ways. The rooms still look shabby chic and bright colors are used. I guess we could call it updated shabby chic.
If you decorate this way you find it's homey and warm and comfortable to live with.
You can get lots of ideas from HGTV website or any of the magazines like Country Living. Target carries the Rachel Ashwell line under Simple Shabby Chic.
Look in magazines or check out all the shabby chic on hub pages, study the shabby chic look and you will be able to figure out how to incorprate it into your home.
Where to get your ideas for shabby chic.
If your looking for new items to decorate with look in garden center they usually have great stuff.
In your bedroom any old table will work for a night stand or dresser, headboards in fabric or wood and metal... Any kind of bedspread can be used for your bedroom, chenille, matelasse, homemade quilts and flowered. I love the first bedroom photo with the red spread. Green trim and boots at the foot of the bed.
Shabby chic in the garden.
You can also add shabby chic outside and around your garden. Use old fences, wire or wood. Old gliders. Vintage trellises and chairs. Vintage or new bird houses.
The old wood chair is in my garden it was left behind by the last owners of this house.

It is cool that you are finding ways to decorate your home!
I love what you've done with the place! I have a living room with NOTHING on the walls because I can't make up my mind what to put there...
...and my kitchen walls are RED and I love it!
Lovely and useful tips which i so much enjoyed the pics in here, thanks.
I love Shabby chic myself! I do however prefer white and light in my interior design. Furthermore, I like to mix strong hues like red, purple or green into the style. Your interior is beautiful, and the red give it a dramatic flair. Thank you for sharing your ideas with us! Rated up, useful and beautiful.
What a nice home you have created!
Thanks for showing me the photos of your work.
