Chair 1 Mix and Match Upholstery Fabric.
Furniture upholster mix and match is the best way to go, I think. I love mix and match this look. Here are some samples of what can be done with your sofas, chairs or foot stools.
Pretty chair with blue and white print on front and solid colors on the back.
I know that some people may not like this but I do and think it's a fun look on furniture. You can buy this type of furniture more and more.
Chair 2 Cushions covered in a quilt.
This chair was covered in an old quilt just on the seat and the back. I think this is a good idea for old quilts you may have that aren't good for anything else. You can also sew your own blocks, sew together and use for chair.
Different sections of chairs and sofas can be upholstered in different fabric, arms and front of arms can be done different. Seats and back can be in different fabrics.
If it's just the cushions you want upholstered and don't want to do it yourself it's very cheap to have just that done. Better than buying a new sofa. I once took in seat cushions that had been torn up by a dog. I found the fabric took them and had them upholstered. Very cheap.
Chair 3 Quilt on top.
Another pretty chair with a quilt used on it. Just upholstering the back and cushions, not real hard to do. In this day and age when we all need help to save this kind of thing gives a new look to old furniture.
On this chair it looks like they just covered the top of the cushion and the top of the stool. Maybe just sewn it on by hand.
Chair 4 Shabby Chic
This chair is a favorite of mine. It has been upholstered in scrapes of fabric and a sampler used on the back of the chair. Samplers are pretty easy to find in yard sales or antique stores usually not real expensive. Ebay also has some good buys. Trim has also been added.
Shabby chic look but could be done in any color.
Chair 5 Old Quilt.
This chair is done in old quilts but also can be done with remnants. This is my kind of chair I love all the bright colors. Any old chair you find anywhere can be done this way. Old pieces of quilts can be bought pretty cheap if it is just a cutting quilt. You can also find lots of fabrics that look like quilts. Old bedspreads or comforters will also work.
Chair 6 Back and Front in Different Fabric.
Chair 6 is my chair. I wanted it done with roosters and I found a fabric that had small roosters on it than I also wanted a black plaid of some kind. I found that also they are not coordinating fabric but they do look good together. This chair and it's mate I saw on the side of the highway and yelled to my husband "STOP". We drove in the drive and they sold them to us for 2.00 each.
Right now I have two love seats that need to have the cushions covered. When I get them done I will be sure to put the pictures on.
Chair 7 Modern Look.
This chair was done in a plain fabric for the front and colorful stripe fabric for the back. It has a more of a modern look. Chairs don't always have to look country. You can use any fabric that has a modern feel to it and make any chair look great. Fabric stores are always putting upholstery fabric on sale. So it doesn't cost much.
Chair 8 Plaids and Flowers
Another example of different fabrics on the chairs 8 and 9. Plaids work the best to add with a pattern. High back chairs seem easy to find at yard sales I just saw one this summer that looked like the two chairs pictured. The chair needed to be recovered. They were so pretty and had good bones but I have to remember I live in a small house now and can't bring home everything I see. I don't want to become a hoarder.
Chair 9 Flowers, Stripes and Red Plaid.
I think chair 9 is beautiful. I love the colors. I'm a red person, anything that has red in it makes me happy. They have mixed three fabric on this chair.
Black and red always look nice together.
Chair 10 Quilt and Fabric Mix.
Another chair done in a quilt. Yellow on the sides and quilt on the seats. This chair looks so homey and warm.
Use up any fabric you have. Why not? It's also a cheaper way of upholstery because if you have left over fabric you can use it up.
Also if you use a solid say on the back of a chair solids are sometimes cheaper to buy than a printed fabric.
Coordinating fabrics.
These may not look like they are coordinating fabric but they are.
I really don't care if my fabric is coordinating I'm all for putting on any fabric you like.
You can also turn remnants of upholstery fabric into a quilt by cutting into blocks and sewing together then put on chair or footstool.
Chair 11
This sofa is covered in coordinating fabric. If you look at it close you will see different fabric on the front, seats, back and arms. I count 4 different fabrics.
The best thing about this is if you have an old sofa or chair that wears out just on the cushions you can have just the cushions replaced with a fabric that coordinates with the rest of the sofa or chair.
You can also use leather and fabric for a sofa or chair.
Here's another idea for covering furniture, use an old vintage table cloth, dresser runner or anything like old embroidered pieces that you aren't going to use for anything else.
I have also used place mats for covering a wood chair seat. You may have to add fabric to the place mat to make it big enough but if you sew that is easy or put more then one place mat together.
This ottoman (hassock) (footstool) sales for $499. but the same type can easily be made from remnants of fabric that you have or can be bought in any fabric store. Upholstery or regular fabric. Patchwork design is very popular. Remember if you have an old coffee table it can always be turned into a footstool. A little batting and fabric.
Another sample of sofas done in different fabrics. Solid color sofa works best then you can just do the cushions in a different fabric. Through the years I have gotten rid of so many sofas I wish I still had and could cover them this way.
Don't forgot paint cloths, they are so strong and come in big pieces they can be used to cover furniture. .
I once heard Suzanne Somers say she covered everything in her house in muslin because it was so neutral and it is one of the cheaper fabrics.
Also if you come across drapes that are cheap they can be used to cover furniture. Just think how cool old 50's fabric would look on a chair. Old drapes are often found in yard sales.

Story of the Ugly Chair.
This is the chair from he--!!
I have done everything to get rid of this chair. It looks terrible, it's dirty, it's ugly, it's falling apart, the frame is broken. My husband loves this chair. It's an old Lazy Boy chair wall away rocker. The wall away part of it broke long ago. Lazy Boy replaced that with just a regular recliner mechanism. We bought it in about 1972. It use to be gold. After that we had it upholstered in this blue. The blue doesn't go with anything in our living room.
It was used to rock our youngest son.
The kids have piled on my husband in this chair. The dogs and cats did too.
I sat in it at night when my heart was giving me so much trouble.
Our oldest granddaughter use to sit in it with her papa when he had hair. She would put all her little girl hair barrettes and hair clips in his hair.
My husband broke his ribs when he fell on the ice. He slept in this chair for weeks.
He rocked our two youngest granddaughters in this chair when they were babies.
I finally got the chair down in the basement. He was so unhappy with the chair I gave him that I finally gave up and we hauled this old chair back up. As you can see all of our animals love it too.
I have never seen this chair anyplace else until I saw Matthew McConaughey bio on tv and he showed his Dad's old chair. It was the same chair my husband has and he had his reupholstered in leather. I would like to do that but my husband does not like leather. It definitely has to be reupholstered but in what? The fabric will have to be strong and the frame will have to be fixed.
Everyone knows this is Papa's chair. When he goes out of the room eveyone sits in it but when Papa walks in the room they all jump up and move to another chair.
That is our dog Reno (13) in the chair now. Well, when I find the right fabric it will be covered again unless it really falls apart before that. I've tried to just get him a new recliner but he can't find any he likes.
It's the Archie Bunker chair.

Thank you for your hub - I love the country look in houses and think your ideas and examples great - cheers
I made one of these when I was around 21 I just sewed in the evening, after work any scraps of really cool fabric i sourced from almost anywhere directly onto a couch with a curved upholstery needle. Mostly tapestry, it looked great in my Studio. I eventually sold it to a friend after, her hassling me for it for about the entire time I had it.
I will add it did look revolting while it was in progress.
I think with these types of furnishings everything will look very colorful n full of life.
These Sofas are amazing! How long did it take you to make these sofas?
I really like Chair 4! Good detailed hub with pics. Thanks for taking the time to write this & share it.
No problem moon lake. Let me know if I can ever help you find some fabric for this or another project. I'll keep my eye on your hub!
I like when i see that people don't waste their money to buy from bug corporations and instead they create their own products. Great hub. I will have to quit IKEA
The chair 5 looks so royal and I would love to have that.
Good post and examples. I am trying to figure out what to do with an old wingback recliner that I just can't give up. I had thought 2 fabrics and am now intrigued by the idea of using more. Also the idea of sewing directly on to the chair with a curved needle is enticing. I may take a pic of it and turn into a line drawing then draw on dif fabrics in dif spots and see how I like.
Thanks for the inspiration.
Kathy
