Found Old Vintage Items For Decorating With.
85What to do with old Vintage Items
This hub is about found Items For decorating. Some of my items and just ideas for what you can do with cheap items you have picked up here and there from rummage, tag or anitque stores.
Recycle, Recycle and Recycle!
Anything can be turned into something great and cheap for your home. I decorate with whatever I can find. Add some paint in a bright color bring the item into the modern world.
Old dressers (chest of drawers) can be turned into sideboards for your dinning room in a small house they work great because they are so good for storage.
They can also be painted and used as end table either by your bed or your sofa. If you like leave them rustic. Like the photo below.
We used our old dresser in our bathroom for our sink. We left the large mirror on it. It's really nice, it's big has lots of counter space and I love the large mirror that's with it.
You can always bring the outdoor items in and the inside items out. Old outdoor wicker chairs look nice around an old farm table.
We had an old screen house without the top and we used the pieces from it as a trellis for our grape vine. The vine is so big the trellis can't be seen when it's all leafed out. The picture below isn't the best but you can get the idea from it.
Use old wine bottles to make a bottle tree for the garden it keeps evil away. Plant climbing vines on the bottle tree in the Spring.
Reusing old furniture is also very green, less in the landfill. Watch any of the decorating shows and they always use old pieces.
Book Shelves For Found Projects.
We have an old barn full of stuff like this. An old bookcase can be painted used for a bookcase or for storage of other items in your house. If the items in the bookcase need to be hidden add a rod and make or buy a curtain for it. Beef the look up by adding trim. Paint in a bright color.
The white bookcase you see is now upstairs in our house with a fresh coat of paint. This bookcase came out of my husband's childhood home. I'm using it for my sewing items. You know quilters always have a big stash and need a place to put their stash.
Drop Leaf Tables and Antique Sewing Machines.
I love drop leaf type of tables. They can be used for a side table in the bedroom or living room. I use one I have for my sewing machine. I like it for that because it can stay small but if I need more room while sewing I just lift the leaves on both sides or just one side, then I have lots more room to spread my fabric out.
The same goes for old antique sewing machines in those pretty old cabinets, if no longer in use they can be used in a hall to hold keys, a place to drop items when you come in the door or for side tables by a sofa. Little drawers can keep tv remotes and other small items you need near by.
Found Old Wagons
Turn old wagons into a place for your flowers or a mini herb garden. My old wagon is still in the barn. One of those projects we have to get to.
I have seen them done as coffee tables with a piece of glass on top. You can also leave off the glass and you have a place to put books, remotes and maybe a plant. If you like the rusted look, spray paint a clear vanish on them so the rust won't fall off.
If your having a party their also a good place for ice and drinks. If they leak add a piece of plastic to keep it from leaking all over. You can pull it anywhere you want.
Decorating with old ladders
Old ladders come in all types step ladders, platform, extension, folding ladders, articulated ladders. Their tall short all sizes. Extension ladders would be newer, but there are some that look old and remember you can always cut a big ladder down if you have to or take an extension ladder apart. Articulated ladders can be folded up in many different ways and are mostly metal. You can always turn them into a table and put a piece glass on them for the top. Step ladders are the the best the ones you can really do something with and you can find many old ones. Foldering ladders are so nice because they come in very small to tall and you can find old ones in all colors. You open them wide or leave them folded and just lean against a wall. I love the little wood ones that sold very cheap not long ago. I don't know if they still sell cheap.
Old ladders have so many uses, put them in the garden for plants.
Hang one up to hang hummingbird feeders, candles, or chimes from or hang plants on them
Hang one in the house for pot and pans or for a book shelf.
Hang on wall and use for pictures or knick knacks.
Use in bathroom for towels.
Hang your beautiful quilts on a ladder.
Side of the bed for a night stand to hold your book, clock, glass or bible.
Two ladders together 3 boards in between them for shelves that will hold lots of your items.
Use them to hang your pretties on.
Use them to put your shoes on.
Put a top on a ladder and turn it into a ladder stool.
Leave them rustic or paint them in a pretty color.
Use an old ladder to grow a vine on.
Many Found Item To Redo.
Anything vintage and old can be turned into something great. Old wire trash can for holding toilet paper. Old baskets for puppies, flowers, magazines or kitchen towels.
Old chairs, old wicker chairs paint and add cushions. If their no good for sitting on put flowers in them for the yard.
Old garden chairs paint in bright colors place around the yard. A yard always looks good with a pop of color. I have purple garden chairs sitting by an old white picket fence.
Collect old chairs paint them all one color and use them at your table. They will look great. I'm sure I have Gypsy I would love the color around a table.
Old lanterns hang from a branch you find outside and place indoors like the ones in the picture. I use the lanterns around the house on different shelves. They can also be used to hang in tree branches outside and candles or solar lights placed inside. Use them on shepherds hook add citronella oil, keep the mosquitoes away.
Old kitchen stools repaint and recover in any kind of fabric. If you have room stools in the kitchen are always handy.
Old windows can be used for anything. Hang pictures in them or collections I had one in my kitchen to hang my pot and pans on. Add mirrors to an old window and it will look nice hanging anywhere in the house.
Old rake heads or full rakes for hanging aprons or dish towels on. You can also put stem glasses on a rake head. They are cute decoration on the porch or deck. Hang in the bedroom to hold necklaces.
Old antique refrigerators paint use to keep books in or anything you want to store that will be safe.
Old stoves, add a light kit and place outside on deck or just use on deck as a wood burner. If you use as a wood burner just be sure it vents and sits on a safe floor. Paint in a pretty fire safe paint. You may also be able to add glass crystals to old vintage fireplaces. That you would have to check on, it would sure be pretty. Looking at the crystals glowing on your deck at night.
This bed I bought from a cousin for about 20.00. It was brown and not to good looking. I took it home painted it and put it in the bedroom where the granddaughters slept.
We just pulled it out of storage and have put it in our tiny farm bedroom.
My nieces were just visiting and when they saw our little farm house they got some ideas. One niece lives in a big house and she needed to warm it up and give it some character and she is now on a search for some items she saw here. The search is the fun part of decorating.
This light I bought on ebay. No one wanted it because it has the big light bulbs instead of the little ones. Cleaned it up added some extra crystals I had and bought shades from Menards for it. I have another one coming and I'll show it when it's cleaned up.
The beds we bought from an add in the paper, paid $65.00 for them. Old quilts on the bed, one is from my grandmother and the other I got at a yard sale. The dresser I can't remember where we bought it must have been a yard sale, made of birdseye maple, with the mirror. I don't have the mirror up yet and one knob is missing around here somewhere. We put this room together very fast. All you need is a wedding and see how fast you get things done. Some of the pillows are made from old levi shirts. Old plates hanging on the wall.
It's so much fun to get an item you want in your head and than start the seach for it. Looking high and low and maybe taking a year or more to find just what you want.
Old Boxes
This old wood box I sit by my back door. I had to measure it and then find baskets that would fit in it. I use it for mittens, gloves and scrafs in the winter. You could also put some boots in the baskets if you line them with a plastic. Great place for flip flops and garden shoes in the summer. You can click the photos to see the large look.
Use old wood boxes for just about anything. This one I have my glasses in.
I know lots of young girls would just call this a granny house and I guess it is. But if they would just think about it, so much furniture could be bought cheap, pretty color added with a modern look and they could have a great place that looked modern. Modern handles put on dressers. All sorts of things can be done to make vintage look modern.
I saw some revamping of some vintage furniture to a modern look on the Nate Show. The items looked great. There are really so many talented young women out there who are redoing and refurbishing old junk.
Below are just some ideas of what can be done with old junk.

Love the use of the old stuff. I am crazy for salvaged items and you've suggested some great ideas. I think I like the ladders best.
Hi moonlake,
I love this one and like you find so much joy in salvaging old items of furniture.
Take care
Eiddwen.
I like little projects like these, finding stuff around the house to refurbish. Good ideas you have!
You have a lot of great ideas here. You make a particularly good point about using different types of chairs around a kitchen table. As long as they are united with a single color, they all look like they belong. I particularly love the ideas you give for using old ladders. Ladder bookcases are quite popular right now and can be very expensive!
Lovely hub. Giving life to old furniture is a great way to explore your creativity and make your home unique.
Maybe it's the recycler in me but I love your hub. Tonight I was watching a show where they cut the legs off a dining table to make a coffee table. The way we look at objects can create a completely new look for a room. Voted up!
I added legs to a coffee table so it could be used as a sofa table. For some reason until yesterday, I never thought of cutting the legs off.
You have terrific ideas and do a beautiful job on the makeovers. Up and beautiful.
i love the transformation you've done on those old things. they are so beautiful you would not think the came from old and dilapidated stuff.
Thank you for sharing. I love redecorating old furniture and making something new and you have given really good ideas!
What an awesome hub, this is what I love to do too, but you have taken this to a whole new level or maybe I am just not as inventive!! I love your ideas.
Fossicking around second-hand and charity shops as well as at rummage sales excites me so much more than shopping for something brand new. I love the idea of having something with a history and that has been preloved and cherished by another family in its former life.
Thank you so much for this awesome, useful and interesting hub and I have voted it as such.
I love this article! I love decorating and my husband and I have a lot of old stuff in our house and garage that the previous owner left. Im going to look around and see what I can use them for!
LOVE LOVE the Ladder as a pot hanger and Garden lighting fixture. I love old things, but my feng shui background prevents me from apply the Reuse it principle unless it is from someone I know because of the history of the item(its ownership). All items have an energy attached to it. In Feng Shui if if the person who owned it was a good person that is fine to put in the house. But If it is a bad person with negative energy and I put it in a house, it can spread negative vibes.I voted you up and beautiful ideas!
Yes! It is true! Bad spirits can hang onto items! I have known people who find things bring them into their home and bad things happen! It surreal!
What a bunch of wonderful transformations! My favorite was the ladder with ascending flowers.
What a fantastic hub! Loved all of your ideas. Many of the designers on HGTV utilize old objects and transform them as you have done. Just yesterday I went with a friend of mine to a thrift shop and we found some wonderful things for her home. Love doing that!!! Recycling and reusing is not only good for the environment but great for the pocketbook as well. Up, beautiful and useful ratings! :))
great pics, and ideas too..
Delightful ideas you've shared here! Love that lamp in that room, and hope to see the other one when you get it done.
I would like to link this hub to mine on painting a dresser, if you have no objection. Thanks!
Really great ideas. I am full of ideas myself unfortunately with an active Toddler I am just about managing house and garden.... hope to take some inspiration from that with me :)
I love recycling, I love Victorian, vintage, and retro styles. I love new ideas about reusing stuff, so I guess I must love this hub. haha. Lots of votes. Am planning to read more of your ideas!
Oh this is amazing...so many pictures and so many ideas! I love vintage items. I especially like the white bed with floral print.
Voted up!
I love your ideas, goes right along with my style I like to refer to as Early American Yard Sale.
We need to get you your own TV show! You may call your house a granny house but I have a feeling it is beautiful and warm. The modern style has it's place but nothing beats the old furniture for making you feel comfortable. You've done a lot of great stuff and your pictures are a nice addition to a really good hub. Voted up, interesting and useful.
just finding your hubspace. Wonderful ideas. Keep them coming!
Sometimes I stumble upon a blog post that perfectly answers a question that brought me to perform a search in the first place - your post is a good example of such a happy encounter. Thanks! :-)
Great resource! Thanks for sharing, I found it valuable.

I had a great time looking at the pictures. Thank you for sharing your wonderful ideas. I will have to pull out some old furniture from the garden shed and start painting them as well.
