Cleaning Up The Yard

It's fall here in Wisconsin. Somewhere in the garden is a little ghost pumpkin. Wonder if we will find him. For some reason, I love the white pumpkins and made sure to plant some this year.

When fall comes around here all our maple trees start to turn. Most of what we have in the yard is maple. Then it's time for cleaning out the garden before the frost comes. Frost comes early here.

Putting away the lawn furniture and just really getting things ready for winter. We need to bring in the fish from under the rain chain. Cats love seeing the fish come in gives them something to look at. We only have two fish this year for the cats to look at and try to catch. They love the fish bowl because it's down low and they can drink the water. Which I think is gross, but they like it.

Cleaned the Garden.

We cleaned out the garden took in all the vegetables. Had so many tomatoes, but for some reason this year they wouldn't turn red. When we brought them in the house they would just spoil. Don't know what happened. The weather I guess caused it.

We had cucumbers, zucchini, pumpkins, squash, and pretty little white gourds coming out our ears. My husband doesn't like me putting pumpkins in his garden, but I just have to. This year I planted green, white and giant orange.

We put the onions and the squash in the barn for now. Potatoes we get from across the road where the farmer has a whole field full of potatoes. My husband works for two potato fields so we have no problem with having potatoes all winter. They are so good when they're fresh out of the ground. We save those in the cellar of our basement.

The top picture of the pumpkin with green leaves is the big pumpkin we grew this year.

Giant Pumpkin

The giant pumpkin got so big we had to use to wheelbarrow to get it to the spot we wanted to put it, for fall decoration. It took both of us to get this pumpkin into the wheelbarrow. This is a first; we have never had a pumpkin get this big. Now we're going to clean them out and save the seeds for next year. I never make pumpkin pie with the pumpkins. I did it once and it wasn't very good not worth all the work. I may try next year or maybe not and just stick to buying it in the can.

The Little Ghost Pumpkin

My sister-in-law and brother were here from MN. She and I went out to the garden trying to find all the pumpkins, cucumbers, squash, gourds, and zucchini. We could see a pumpkin vine going up into our grapevine which grows next to the garden, but we couldn't find any pumpkin. My sister-in-law even got into the vine and picked the grapes to take home and make jam but didn't see anything, but grapes. Believe me, this grapevine is huge and so thick with leaves it's even hard to find the grapes.

The birds love it. If we don't pick the grapes they fly right into the vine and eat the grapes.

When it froze my husband called me outside one day and there in the top of the grapevine was the little lost ghost pumpkin. That's what family members started to call it. We didn't need any ghost hunting equipment to find him just a frost. See him on the top of the frozen grapevine?

Little lost ghost pumpkin was found right around Halloween.

Maple Syrup.

The family who use to live here always made maple syrup from the trees, but we have never tried it. I personally don't like homemade maple syrup; give me good old store bought syrup. Mrs. Butterworth is my favorite.

All the jugs they used are in the top of the barn. There must be a way of giving the homemade syrup a better taste.

Bottle Tree and Vegetables.

We now have a bottle tree in our garden. My husband made it and I love it. I have a hub on the bottle tree.

This year we had so many tomatoes. We had a family get together here yesterday and I was giving tomatoes to everyone. They are so good so much better tasting than the store tomatoes.

We had zucchini coming out our ears. Our son took all of those. He knows people who want them.

It's nice to have a good harvest and it wasn't easy this year with the very hot weather and trying to keep everything watered. We had an early spring and now I think we will have an early fall. It was too cold for anyone to sit outside yesterday. I had to have the whole clan in the house. This was ok with them the Packer game was on.

Wisconsin is beautiful in the fall. The green trees like maple and oak turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow with the background of the green pine trees and spruce. The colors in the fall are the brightest when we have dry, sunny days and cool, dry nights.
