Still you sadly stand

The Old Tree.

The old tree started dying because the men who use to live in this house used it for a target and shot it full of lead the lead is killing it. A few years ago the old basswood tree was hit by lighting and the whole side was blown out. The wood ducks were gone, but it may have killed a few squirrels. We thought it was a bomb. It shook our whole house. We walked out to the road to see what had happened and all we could see was a storm way off in the distance. It took a few days before we realized it was the tree had been hit. The tree is still standing, but I don't know for how long.

It's really too bad the birds and animals love the old tree.

It is about 70 ft. tall.

Basswoods are also called American Linden. They grow well to zone 2 so they're good growers up north. Old hollow trees like ours make a great place for wildlife.

Basswoods are used for carving but also for furniture, veneer, drawing boards and tongue depressors.

Honey from the linden flower is the best there is.

The old tree has stood there all summer and looking worse every day. We think it may have been hit by lighting again.

We should have to cut it down, but we just have not got to it yet. We really hate to take it down.

The guys we've had out here to look at it are just not sure about getting it down. They're a little leery of it. It's not going to be easy to cut. They're worried over how many dead heads are in it. So much of the tree has died from the bottom. Like my husband said: "Deadheads" or "Widow Maker" are a woodman's worst enemy.

The birds in the old tree.

.Here are pictures of some birds who loved our old tree. The wood ducks also nested in the tree. This was a surprise to us when we saw the wood ducks in the tree.

The pileated woodpeckers really love it. They can find lots of bugs in this tree. Every year it turns green. Poor old tee keeps standing there, now we can see right through it.

Our little nephews were playing around it one day and I made them move. They were hitting it with sticks. I told them if it let lose some of its parts, it would fall on them. I heard my nephew say, "It’s just a dead old tree." He's too little to realize how much life that old tree gives to baby squirrels, birds and other animals

Don't often see Cardinal's around here but one there was one on the branches of the old tree.

The Old Tree in 2011

This is our old tree in the yard for 2011. If you look at one of the pictures closely you'll see a little animal has made his home in the tree.

You can see it's falling apart more and more every day. It's not close enough to the house to hit it if it does fall. It should fall the other way into the meadow.

Even this year it was green and full of leaves nothing on it looked dead. Still it stands through wind blowing, rain and snow.

I started this hub I think about 3 years ago and it's one of the hubs I was thinking of taking down than I thought of a haiku for this tree now I'm going to leave it up.

The Old Tree

Spring of 2012

This Spring I told my husband it looked like the old tree wasn't going to get any leaves. All the other trees nearby had leafed out. Then finally the old tree leafed out too. It's still standing and the animals still love it. We were hit again by lighting yesterday but this time it didn't hit the tree it hit something which caused one of our Directv receivers to go out.

I will keep this hub updated for the old tree.

I think the hole in the tree is getting bigger.

Still you linger on

Time passes on Spring comes again

Is it your last year
