Birds In Our Backyard

We live in the country and have lots of birds in our backyard. This is a hub on them and the photos I have taken, some aren't the greatest. I take them from a distance or inside the house so they won't fly away. The minute they hear the door they will take off. We have woodpeckers, hummingbirds, eagles and much more. I have a hub on our nesting bluebirds this year.

I love nature and wildlife. Don't you? It's so much fun to just watch the beauty around us. It's free we can all enjoy it. Have you heard nature when it calls? Join me and discover my backyard.

The first picture at the top is a woodpecker after the suet we put out

Pine Grosbeak (Pinicola enucleator )

Pine Grosbeaks love the pine trees, but I have found they also love the maple trees all around our house. Their name Pinicola is Latin for pine dweller.

The little chick-a-dees stay off the feeder until the grosbeaks are gone. .

The Grosbeaks like a flat feeder where they can fly in and fly out without problems. They have also been eating the crab apples and grapes from our trees and vines.

Cold doesn't seem to bother them. They come here even when it's 20 below. They are fighters always fighting with each other. My husband goes out to have a cigarette and they fly in and out with him standing there. They don't seem to be bothered by the dog standing right up to the feeder watching them.

Sandhill Cranes

Sandhill Cranes in the potato field across from our house. They nest in the fields. They are very loud and will wake us up in the morning. This is not a great picture taken out our bedroom window. Believe me, they can wake the dead. I think it's a family Mom, Dad and two kids.

Their food is worms, grasshoppers, snails, frogs, seeds, and sometimes snakes, small birds and mice. Potato farmers don't like them because they eat swollen underground plant stems, like a potato.

They have wondered into our backyard looking around for, I don't know what.

The Cranes below were in another potato field. The fields are either planted in potatoes or beans.

Hummingbirds

This little hummer flew into our barn. We rescued him and the granddaughters took his picture. When I opened my hand he flew away.

I made hummingbird sugar water for the feeder yesterday. First I tried four cups of water to one cup of sugar. They fly in took a taste and left they didn't like it. I have changed it to 3 cups of water 1 cup of sugar. They are coming in a little better now.

This hummingbird feeder is in our backyard on our deck. We get Ruby-throated Hummingbirds here. I have never seen any other kind of hummingbird here.

I have more hubs on our birds, bees, bear, cougar, wolves and eagles, all about the wildlife in our area by our home.

Juncos

The snowbird (Juncos), this little bird liked the bird house under our deck. Safe and warm and I think it kept him out of the wind. We have lots of Juncos they winter here and farther south. They are nice little birds and they like to eat from our feeders. Alaska and Canada are the juncos' summer home.

Indigo Bunting and Rose Breasted Grosbeak

Rare to see the Indigo Bunting, also known as blue canaries just like the goldfinch are called yellow canaries here. He was happy to eat the bird seed all over the ground. If we see them at all they always come in with the goldfinch and the Grosbeaks. This photo was taken in the Spring. He's such a beautiful little bird I wish he would stay around. He's eating with a rose-breasted grosbeak another very pretty bird.

Partridge and Dove

This is a partridge out by the big trees. Trying to get some of the seed we put out. We get mother and baby partridge in the meadow. One of the reasons I stopped walking down there with our dog, if he saw the babies he would try to jump on them. A big dog trying to jump up and down really looked silly but I worried he would hurt them. I knew he just wanted to play. Our dog is too old now to walk to the meadow.

Sorry, not a great picture of the Morning Dove, Turtledove or Rain Dove but the best I could get for now. I love the wooed sound they make. They are pretty much here all year round. They are all over here like I think they are in most of the North America. Some will head north in the spring but if there is a bird feeder near by they will stay.

Grosbeak

The birds hit our doors or windows all the time. We do what we can to stop them like putting hanging things in the window. It doesn't always help, most of the time they're just stunned. This little guy flew away after we took him outside. If we see them we always pick them up and warm them before seeing if they will fly away. They will usually fly away; sometimes they are not so lucky.

Pileated Woodpecker Video

Levi Jones mewing in the background and our bird clock. Sorry, it's such a wiggly video. It seems every time I go to take video everyone in the house gets mouthy. Taken on Jan 2012, you can see our Christmas decorations still up. It was 21 below here this morning.

The crane pictures were taken on the same day I took the Eagle pictures on my Eagle hub in the same field. The Cranes must feel safe hanging around the Eagles. If an Eagle would go after a Loon I would think they would go after a Crane.

We always keep a bird book on our table so when the birds fly in we find out what they are. Most of the birds we know but in the spring will sometimes get an odd bird here and there.

Heavy Rain

We had a heavy rain when this happens we always get a puddle in our yard. The birds sure have a fun time in the puddle. I have bird baths in the yard but they like the puddle. I was hiding behind bushes to get the picture. They all have such shape eyes. We had a whole gang of turkeys in the yard but as soon as I stepped out the door they saw me and I couldn't get a picture.

This hub is all about the bluebirds in our yard.
