Bathroom Remodel Using An Old Dresser For Vanity. Reuse, Redo Don't Buy New.
Bathroom Remodel Using An Old Dresser.
We bought an old farmhouse. It was not in good shape. The house needed remodeling. We had to tear out the old bathroom because the placement of it was in the way of building better staircases. The staircases going to the basement and the second floor. The stairs in this house were like ladders, not stairs.
We took out the old bathroom built new stairs where the bathroom had been. There was a bedroom behind the stairs so we split the bedroom in half. We added a laundry room on one side and a bathroom on the other side.
I just hate not using what we have. We checked vanities for the bathroom, they were expensive. We did have an old dresser we never used. I think we bought it in the 60’s or 70’s. I didn't care about the age, it was still pretty and I wanted to use it for a vanity. We worked it into the bathroom and we just bought a laminate top for it and we got the sink free from someone. We cut a hole in the top of the dresser the size of the sink. We also had to cut a sink hole in the laminate. The doors on the dresser opened up and there are three drawers inside. We had to remove the drawers to make room for the pipes for the sink. We still have lots of storage where the pipes are. The other side of the dresser has doors which open up with three drawers inside. The drawers hold so much stuff I put all my make-up and hair stuff in the drawers and they are now full. The dresser also had a large mirror on it. We would have liked to put double sinks in, but I didn't want to lose the drawer space.
Above the dresser, we had to buy lights. The antique lights we got from our daughter are not bright enough for the dresser. I have bad eyesight so I had to have better lights above the dresser. I wanted to use them but in this place above the dresser, we just couldn't.
The Bathroom
We built a closet in the bathroom to hold towels and anything else needed to go in there. The doors for our closet were in the barn. I don't even know where they came from. We just painted and installed them, we had enough doors for the bathroom and laundry room. We added tile to the floors and we put in a shower. We also put in a window which I love. I can't stand closed in bathrooms.
The shower was our only mistake I think. I miss having a bathtub.
We needed a light for the entrance to the new bathroom, so we used the antique light we got from our daughter. I’m not much on everything matching so I will use anything that's handy.
This bathroom is eclectic. I believe the dresser is Spanish style and the light fixture is Victorian.
I had to put a vintage wire trash basket and my Indian rock in the bathroom. The trash basket works great for extra toilet paper.
The little aqua bench bought at a yard sale.
I have a handy husband he did all the work, the plumbing, and the wiring the whole thing. I just come up with ideas. He wishes I wouldn't have so many ideas.
I added old family photos in the bathroom, photos of family members at the beach or lake. I was watching Hoda and Kathie Lee. They were arguing about whether family photos should be in the bathroom. I believe they can be. You shouldn't put the originals in, the moisture might ruin them.
Above The Shower.
We also built a little cubby above the shower and put baskets in the cubby. You would not believe how much baskets can hold. We need all the extra storage we can get in this old house.
We put hooks on the back of the door to hold towels or robes. We also put a hook beside the shower to hold a towel. We also put hooks inside the closet doors.
Any place we could get extra room in there is what we did.
The floor has ceramic tile. I love the tile it is so easy to clean.
We added two towel racks to the bathroom.
Would you ever use a dresser for your vanity in the bathroom?
